Akhtamar Statue of Princess Tamar with Illuminating Light in hands from Ancient Western Armenian Legend, Lake Sevan - Gegharkunik province - Armenia
The legend of Akhtamar goes like this:
An Armenian Princess named Tamar lived on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van (in Historic Armenia). She was in love with a commoner. The young man would swim from the mainland to the island each night, his way was lit by the Princess Tamar. One day her Father found out about this and became very upset. He smashed her light, leaving the young man in the middle of the lake without an idea of which direction to swim. Akh, Tamar... (Oh, Tamar) - this is where the name of the island comes from.
